The President had given orders to shoot any commercial airplane that did not land when ordered to. Imagine if the occasion would have risen. The people on the flight that fell in Pennsylvania fought for their life, and lost. About last year, in Italy an Alitalia stewardess was held hostage in flight by a man with a knife. The passengers were luckier, they managed to disarm the hijacker.
